Murder suspect arrested after fatal downtown shooting

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police detectives have arrested for 25-year-old Ricky L. Tanner for 2nd degree murder after a weekend shooting in downtown Spokane left one man dead.

On October 8 around just before 1 a.m., an argument developed outside of the Monterey Cafe in the area of Sprague Avenue and Washington Street. During the argument, one man displayed a knife, one man accessed a handgun and fired a shot, and a third man was struck by gunfire. 

Officers were on scene within minutes of the 911 call and began first aid. The victim, later identified by friends to KXLY as former Spokane Empire player Carl Sims, struck by gunfire was transported to the hospital for his injury and later passed away.

Major Crimes detectives continued their investigation through Wednesday and developed probable cause to arrest Tanner, the suspect who fired the gun. 

Tanner was booked into the Spokane County Jail for one count of 2nd degree murder.
