COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - A 25-year-old man has died of injuries sustained in a crash on US 95 last Wednesday.
The Idaho State Police said Nicholas S. Spooner of St. Maries died from injuries he suffered after his Nissan was hit by a semitrailer.
The crash happened just south of Coeur d'Alene. ISP said the circumstances are still under investigation, but the crash was caused by a major equipment failure on the semi.
ISP said the 2014 Peterbuilt tractor and trailer, owned by Mergenthaler Transfer and Storage, were driven by Wilbert K. Kahoonei of Puyallup. Kahoonei was traveling southbound on US 95, negotiating a right-hand curve when his trailer disconnected.
Spooner and his passenger Timothy P. Spooner, 59, were in the Nissan traveling northbound on US 95. Their car collided head-on with the disconnected trailer in the northbound lane.
Timothy was taken to the Kootenai Health for his injuries. His condition is not known.
This is a serious injury crash. The circumstances are still under investigation but it appears to have been caused by a major equipment failure on the part of the semi truck. Emergency crews are still on scene. pic.twitter.com/eJkJF9QD9K— Idaho State Police (@ispdistrict1) August 14, 2019
The semi driver and his passenger, Darnelle I. Kahoonei, 51, were not injured in the crash.
Mergenthaler Transfer and Storage CAO Art Villa provided the following statement Monday:
We are saddened to hear of the loss, our prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Spooner.
The Idaho State Police who deal with these matter regularly, has suggested a massive equipment failure, we are cooperating fully with that agency and are reviewing the most recent preventative and safety service performed by our outside vendor.
All occupants in both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.
