SPOKANE, Wash - A Spokane man charged with assaulting his girlfriend's young child is also being investigated for child rape.
Spokane County deputies arrested Brandon Oquendo in early November. He was babysitting his girlfriend's 21-month old daughter when she suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to the hospital.
Doctors found bruises all over the child's body and found bleeding in the brain in two locations. The child also suffered from what doctors described as a lung injury, most likely caused by trauma.
At the time, court documents say Oquendo told them he "lost his cool" and hit the child in the stomach. He said that later that day, "he was playing a video game when he became frustrated and hit [the child] on the back of her head while holding the video game remote control."
Oquendo was arrested, then later told a KXLY4 News reporter that he lied to detectives to get the interview over with.
A search warrant filed this week reveals that the child's injuries also included bruising to her private areas. Doctors conducted a sexual assault examination and found evidence that the child had been sexually assaulted. Detectives are asking for a warrant to collect his DNA to see if it matches the DNA found in the sexual examination kit.
Oquendo is being held in the Spokane County jail.
