SPOKANE, Wash. - A comprehensive but divisive program created by Planned Parenthood will not be implemented in Spokane Public Schools.
The Get Real program had been approved twice by the district Human Growth and Development Citizen Advisory Committee, but it received both positive and negative feedback from the Spokane community, so it was pulled from the table Thursday.
Instead, the district will build its new curriculum from a number of different sources. That's how they designed the Human growth and Development that's being taught now. Pulling different lessons from different sources allows them to handpick a curriculum that fits the districts rubrics for sex-education.
The curriculum is for middle school growth and development, and taught to students in grades 6 through 9.
Handpicking the lessons and sources also allows the program some flexibility, so they can adopt curriculum to changing state standards.
