SPOKANE, Wash. - The plan to increase the beauty of Riverfront Park with four distinct pieces of art hit a snag Monday night. The Joint Arts Committee is concerned over high costs and installation problems.
The committee is recommending the four concepts be narrowed down to two designs, the Earth Ring and Step Well. However, preliminary cost estimates for the Earth Ring came in between $1.8 million and $5.2 million. Lead artist Meejin Yoon said in October that those costs could be reduced by downscaling the size of the designs.
The Earth Ring also poses challenges because it's designed to be installed on a slope near the edge of the river and extending outward.
The Arts Commission said it needs more information from Yoon concerning the costs and site location before making any recommendations to the Park Board.
The Joint Arts Commission unanimously voted to extend the contract of Yoon for three months to allow for further design evaluations and cost estimates.
