Arrest made in 35-year-old Chelan County missing persons case

CHELAN COUNTY, Wash. - Chelan County Sheriff's Detectives have made an arrest in a 35-year-old missing persons case.

60-year-old Bernard Swaim has been arrested and charged with First Degree Murder in connection with the 1982 disappearance of Cashmere resident Stephen E. Smith.

On July 18, 1982 30-year-old Stephen E. Smith was reported as a missing person by family members. He was last seen at his home on or around July 12 of that year.

Smith's car, a 1966 Pontiac Tempest, was found abandoned several days after he was reported missing on Dead Man’s Hill road near Dryden, in Chelan County.

The investigation was concluded in 1982. Smith was never found.

Last year, the case was assigned to detectives for further investigation. Following interviews with multiple people,  including Smith’s family members and witnesses, detectives identified Swaim as a person of interest. Swaim was living in Sultan, Washington.

If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Stephen Smith, contact the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office at 509-667-6842.

This is a developing story. Chelan County Sheriff's Office says more information will be available on Monday, March 6.
