Victim of abuse helps deputy fight her attacker into custody

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - A victim of abuse helped Kootenai County deputies fight the suspect into custody Sunday afternoon.

Deputies responded to reports that a female had been battered and then dragged into a vehicle near the Hagadone Marina and Cedars Floating Restaurant.

When deputies arrived, they found the suspect, Kanon M. Charbonneau, trying to leave the area in a vehicle. When his vehicle stopped, a female, with obvious injuries, got out of his vehicle and ran to the safety of the deputy's patrol vehicle.

The deputy tried to arrest Charbonneau, but the suspect headbutted him in the face and began to fight the deputy to the ground. The victim saw the deputy being attacked, and grabbed a PR-24 impact weapon from inside the deputy's vehicle and struck Charbonneau several times. Together, the deputy and the victim took Charbonneau into custody.

The investigation led deputies to believe that Charbonneau had punched the victim in the face, attempted to strangle her, destroyed her personal property, and forced her into his vehicle against her will. Charbonneau is charged with Felony Domestic Battery, Attempted Strangulation, Grand Theft, Battery on a Peace Officer, 2nd Degree Kidnapping, DUI, Malicious Injury to Property, and Destruction of a Telecommunications Device.

The victim was transported to Kootenai Health with significant injuries to her face. The deputy was also taken to Kootenai Health for his injuries.
