Spokane, Wash. - Food insecurity is on the rise throughout the country. With food prices continuing to grow, inflation plays a major role in the crisis.
Looking at your receipt after a trip to the grocery store can be disappointing. Local dietician Alli Stanton says there are a couple of different things you can do that will make a big difference for your grand total.
Download apps for the stores you shop at
Sticking to one or two stores and downloading their apps can bring you big rewards. On these apps, you can collect points and clip digital coupons.
"Then, when you check out, you automatically have coupons that apply to your purchases. But in addition, those stores often track your purchases and give you coupons specifically toward the items you typically buy," said Stanton.
Plan your meals ahead of time and make a list
Pre-planning your meals and making a list will help you only buy the items you need.
"A lot of people are really great at planning out dinner, but they don't tend to think about things like breakfast, lunch, or snacks," said Stanton.
Making a list ahead of time will also help you avoid purchasing duplicate items.
Don't grocery shop when you're hungry
This will help you avoid impulse shopping for items that don't align with your nutritional and financial goals.
Prioritize produce and protein
Stanton says protein is vital for our bodies, so it's important to make sure your grocery list reflects that.Â
"Spending more money in that area is a reasonable thing to do, but you can also look for more economical sources of protein. The price on eggs has finally come back down, so you can get 18 eggs for about three dollars."
Canned tuna and chicken are two great sources of protein that can fuel your entire family at a low cost.
When it comes to produce, choosing your items wisely can make a significant difference in your receipt.
"You definitely want to shop for what's in season. You're going to get the biggest bang for your buck, and you're also going to get the highest quality produce for your money."
Stanton says now is a good time to look at citrus, apples, and bananas. Stanton also mentioned grapes as a consistent good choice.
For both protein and produce, buying the frozen option is a great way to make sure your food stays fresh for a longer period of time.
Buy in bulk
Stores like Costco and Sam's Club are great options for buying in bulk. Stanton says if you choose to buy bulk items, make sure you try the item in a smaller size first. She also recommends skipping items like to-go snack bags. Buying a larger bag and splitting up the portions yourself can be much more affordable.Â
Buy Generic
Try out a variety of generic brands and find the options that work best for you. Stanton also recommends finding a system that works for you, like buying name-brand for essential items and generic for others.
Order your groceries for pick-up
"With grocery order pick-up, you take out the risk of impulse buys. So anything you instinctively reach for is gone because you're just ordering off your list what you need," said Stanton.
The other advantage of ordering items for pickup is that you are likely doing it from your own home. This way, you can keep tabs on what items you already have in your fridge.
Most stores often offer grocery pick-up for free with a minimum purchase of $10–$35.
