SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man who fled from a stolen car Monday morning, with the help of K9 Bane.
Just before 3 a.m. Monday, Deputy Hilton positioned his patrol car on I-90 near the Hamilton exit after hearing radio traffic that a stolen Honda Accord was eastbound on I-90 from Maple St.
Multiple deputies pulled in behind the Honda, which had a large cloud of smoke and flames coming from underneath it.
The suspect continued to flee and exited I-90 onto Appleway Ave. Deputy Hilton executed a PIT maneuver, which stopped the Honda.
The female passenger, later identified as 28-year-old Kaytlin Comack, raised her hands in the air but the driver, 35-year-old Daniel K. Gilbert, jumped out and ran.
Gilbert refused to listen to commands and K9 Bane was deployed. After a short struggle, Deputy Hilton took Gilbert into custody with the assistance of arriving SPD officers.
Another deputy stayed with the Honda and arrested Comack, who had an active felony warrant for her arrest out of Benewah County, Idaho.
The Honda was confirmed as a stolen vehicle reported on March 11 from Everett, WA.
Gilbert said he ran because he had a warrant and didn't want to go to jail. He said he didn't know who the owner of the vehicle was, but that he got it from a friend.
Gilbert received medical attention for his injuries and was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle and a felony warrant.
Comack was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail as a Fugitive from Justice for the Idaho warrant as she awaits extradition.
