SPOKANE, Wash. - Clues from a Saturday night crime were still outside a home near Corbin Park on Tuesday.
A broken screen was leaned up against the house, near 400 West Alice Ave. Police believe 37-year-old Stephen Brown popped that out, so he could crawl through the window. Inside at the time was Amelia Becerra-Agostino and her 9-year-old daughter.
“Next thing I know, my daughter is on the bed with me. I see a white shirt in the hallway,” Becerra-Agostino said. “I was like, I don't know this man. I've never seen this man. What's happening? Like, why are they in my house?”
Becerra-Agostino screamed that she was calling 911 and Brown needed to get out. He took off and headed down the road.
Police later arrested him near Corbin Park, in north Spokane. Spokane Police said he was wanted for another burglary and had meth on him at the time of his arrest.
Brown is being held in the Spokane County Jail. Even with the suspect behind bars, pain and uncertainty remain for Becerra-Agostino and her daughter.
“It's more of a mental and emotional thing. You're impacting our lives in a deeper way than just stealing something that we worked hard for,” Becerra-Agostino said. “This has been my home for over 20 years and now I don't fee comfortable. He's taken something away from us that's going to be a while for us to get back.”
It's a memory that is haunting her daughter still.
“She woke up screaming last night, crying, saying she couldn't get his face out of her mind and that she didn't feel comfortable,” Becerra-Agostino said.
From that terrifying night came a lesson that Becerra-Agostino won't soon forget though.
“Now we know that we need to be prepared and unfortunately the world isn't as beautiful as we'd like to think it is,” Becerra-Agostino said.
