First new drug for depression, in decades, may soon be approved

The first new drug for depression in 35 years may soon be approved.

Ketamine, a compound that has a reputation as a party drug, has been shown in recent tests to be a good treatment for depression.

“Johnson and Johnson” will explain its company's clinical trial results next month at the American Psychiatric Association Meeting.

A separate study out of Columbia University Medical Center also showed Ketamine worked better at curbing suicidal thoughts in depressed patients than a commonly used sedative.
