SPOKANE, Wash. - The start of October also means the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over the last few years, it has become more than just wearing pink – across the nation, companies and organizations are in overdrive with fund-raising efforts and locally, there is no exception.
At Dagny's Coffee in Spokane Valley, every employee has been affected by cancer in some way. With statistics like1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over course their lifetime, they know their customers have too and they want to show they stand with them.
They've started a fund-raising campaign called “Drink Pink October.” All month, three special drinks will be available for purchase with one dollar from each going to CancerCare Northwest Foundation.
Manager Breana Oakshott explains, “ it's local. That's what we really wanted, to know that it is going back to our community and that we are helping in some sort of way.”
The Pink Lady Redbull is watermelon and strawberry flavored. The Pink Fighter Zipfizz is Grapefruit and watermelon flavored while the Pink Ribbon Mocha adds raspberry to give it the pink color.
But they didn't stop there, Breana and her staff know some people go through the fight alone.
By 'pink-i-fying' not only the interior of Dagny's, but their logo color, cups and straws hoping they can brighten the day of someone who needs to know people care about them during the fight of their life.
Barista Maura Lund adds, “ I think its super cool how we can be a community and stick together, and no matter who's suffering from it, no matter how we're suffering from it, even if it's just by handing out coffee to your regulars and contribute back you get to be a part of something bigger. “
Their goal for the month is to raise one thousand dollars. For those who don't enjoy coffee or energy drinks, there are plenty of other items on the menu and donation boxes at every window.
