LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - A small memorial is growing in Liberty Lake Thursday night for a woman who was fatally injured after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street at Country Vista Rd. and Mission Ave. earlier in the day.
The truck fled from the scene.
Liberty Lake Police are continuing their efforts searching for that driver. Investigators say surveillance video shows a late 1990s or early 2000s red Dodge Dakota or Ram truck leave the area after the incident.
The woman was rushed to Sacred Heart Medical Center where she later died.
Police have not released her name, but John L. Scott Real Estate of Spokane Valley posted on their Facebook page, "It is with deep sadness that I inform you our friend and Liberty Lake broker Marilyn Dhaenens was the victim of a hit-and-run incident and passed away this morning."
News of the hit-and-run spread quickly, especially among parents whose children cross the very same street that Dhaenens did.
"Two of my kids walk across the street to go to their bus stops," said Tom Stanley, a parent. "Obviously that gives me a little concern."
"I get really concerned watching the kids out here," said Kim Hadley, who lives in the neighborhood. "We have kids on bicycles and moms on golf carts, and it's really crazy on school mornings.
Hadley says the city just put up flashing hawk lights to warn drivers of the busy crosswalk.
"I'm assuming in the near future it's probably going to require a signal or a light or possibly a roundabout like they did down the street," she says.
Anyone who recognizes the truck or who witnessed the hit-and-run is asked to call Liberty Lake Police or Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
