Ezra Miller seeks treatment for 'mental health issues'
After a string of arrests and erratic behavior that spanned Hawaii to Vermont, “Flash” actor Ezra Miller said they have begun treatment for “complex mental health issues.” The 29-year-old Miller, who identifies as non-binary, issued a statement late Monday. On Sept. 26, Miller is due to appear for arraignment in Vermont Superior Court after being cited for felony burglary in Stamford, Vermont. Authorities last week said Miller had taken several bottles of alcohol from a residence while the homeowners weren’t present. Miller was also arrested twice earlier this year in Hawaii, including for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar. The second incident was for second-degree assault.
Colorado River cuts set to disrupt farming in American West
Federal officials on Tuesday are expected to announce water cuts that would further reduce how much Colorado River water some users in the seven U.S. states reliant on the river and Mexico receive. Cities, farms and water managers in Arizona, Nevada and Mexico are widely anticipating Tuesday’s reductions. They are based on a plan states signed in 2019 to help keep more water in one of the river's key storage reservoirs. But the cuts come as Western states grapple with another, larger looming deadline on the Colorado River about how to share the dwindling water source as it yields less and less to go around.
Boston police boat comes to rescue of stranded groom
Officers with the Boston Police Department’s harbor patrol unit are used to helping boaters in distress, but last weekend Officer Joe Matthews came to the rescue of a groom in danger of missing his own wedding. Patrick Mahoney was scheduled to get married on Thompson Island in Boston Harbor on Saturday, but the boat that was supposed to ferry him to the island where his bride-to-be was waiting broke down. The groomsmen, photographer, DJ and floral arrangements were also stranded. Officer Matthews transported the party to the island on his police boat so Mahoney’s marriage to Hannah Crawford could go on as scheduled.
Lag in slavery reparations from US Jesuits irks descendants
Last year, U.S. Jesuits announced a racial reconciliation initiative in partnership with descendants of people once enslaved by the Catholic order. A leader of those descendants is now expressing deep dissatisfaction with the lack of progress. The initiative proposed a billion-dollar trust to fund educational grants for descendants with the Jesuits committing to contribute and raise the first $100 million. Joseph Stewart, himself a descendant, has asked that the Jesuits transfer proceeds from past land sales and the sale of remaining plantation lands to the trust by Christmas. The Jesuits have said while the process is complicated, they are still committed to it.

Honor or cultural appropriation? Hospital name spurs debate
While segregation was still casting its ugly shadow over the U.S., the Homer G. Phillips Hospital was providing top-notch medical care to a predominantly African American part of St. Louis and training some of the world’s best Black doctors and nurses. The name is still revered, especially in the city’s Black community. So a white developer’s decision to call a new three-bed medical facility “Homer G. Phillips Memorial Hospital” has been met by a backlash that includes a lawsuit, protests and newspaper editorials alleging cultural appropriation. But Darryl Piggee, a Black man who serves on the board of directors for the new hospital, says the name seeks to honor Phillips' legacy, not profit from it.
