New Zealand’s National Party illegally uses song, says Eminem

Rapper Eminem is suing New Zealand’s governing party for using what he says was an unlicensed version of his hit song “Lose Yourself” in a 2014 campaign advertisement.

The BBC reports the party’s lawyers say it used a track it bought from a stock music library that was called “Eminem-esque” and not the actual version of the song. The track was taken from Beatbox, which is a production music company that produces songs that sound similar to famous recordings, but should be different enough to avoid breaching copyrights.

The case begins May 1 and is expected to last for six days.
