New plaza overlooking the Spokane River officially opens

SPOKANE, Wash. — The new plaza along Spokane Falls Boulevard officially opened on Friday.

It’s a project that took more than three years to complete. Beneath the plaza sits a 2.2 million gallon underground storage tank, designed to help keep the Spokane River clean.

According to the City of Spokane, the combined sewer overflow tank holds excess water that’s eventually sent to the wastewater treatment plant for processing.

Community members gathered in October to celebrate the completion of the $180 million program. Shortly after, the plaza was closed for the winter.

With its reopening on Friday, community members can once again enjoy its views of the Spokane River.
