New North Spokane Costco opens to large crowds

The $15 million dollar North Spokane Costco project, located right off the Newport Highway, is complete.

The crowds were gathered early Friday morning for the opening. Some out of curiosity.

“It’s closer to where I live at ’cause I live 9 miles from Loon Lake,” said Costco member Laurel Day.

Others were making their weekly Costco haul.

“My item is fig bars because we’re traveling today,” said Costco member Louise Harless.

Then there was Leah Erb.

“I’m little so I have to get through people so I needed to get here early,” she said.

Leah was fourth in line, arriving two hours before opening on a mission to get Birkenstock sandals.

“So this is my strategy,” explained Leah. “I brought my sister and my mother-in-law and we are going to go in. I have the card, my sister will grab the cart and then we are going to go put the Birkenstocks in the cart, then hover over I!”

On opening weekends at new Costco’s, they’ve got fan favorites like rotisserie chickens and samples as far as the can see but they bring in products that aren’t always available, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Luckily, Leah got her Birkenstocks.

Friday also marked day two of the new roundabout that gets customers into the parking lot.

“It was kind of different,” said Day.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office was on hand to help people navigate through it, as heavier traffic was anticipated. Day shared that while it was different from any roundabout she’s been through, it wasn’t too much of a hassle.

“It was actually good,” she added.

If you missed the opening today, expect even bigger crowds Saturday as Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett, will be making a special appearance.

If you want the chance to meet him, you must be one of the first 250 people in Costco when he arrives at 2 p.m.
