New legislative bill would authorize license plate tracking system
OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new bill in the Washington State Legislature would give the state new surveillance abilities to track license plates from roadside cameras.
House Bill 2566 aims to assist law enforcement with identifying and tracking stolen vehicles by authorizing the use of automated license plate recognition systems.
In addition to general data collection, a provision exists to put vehicles associated with people with felony warrants on a watch list.
The bill takes great measures to exclude photographing the physical occupants of the vehicle.
A public hearing was held for the bill on Jan 30, and it currently sits with the House Committee on Transportation.
