New calculator shows how much I-1631 will cost you
SPOKANE, Wash. — By now, you’ve probably heard about Initiative 1631 for Clean Air in Washington. If approved, Washington would become the first state in the country to tax big polluters.
Companies in the oil and utility industries would have to pay a fee for the amount of carbon they release and some consumers are worried about how these costs would be passed on to them.
Luckily, the Washington Policy Center just introduced a new tool to help you figure out how much I-1631 would cost you. WPC and the Whitworth computer science department worked together to create what’s called the Initiative 1631 Carbon Tax Calculator.
The calculator takes your yearly or monthly use of gas, natural gas and electricity to determine your annual costs in I-1631’s first year if it passes.
