New basketball court mural to be painted in Riverfront Park
SPOKANE, Wash. — Work on one of Spokane’s newest murals is set to begin soon.
Artist Joshua Martel, who refers to himself as “Oowah,” will paint a colorful basketball mural, which will cover the multi-court complex currently being built as a central feature of the North Bank of Riverfront Park.
Martel was selected from several applicants and will complete the project with two apprentices. They will first prep the space for a few days, then begin painting on Saturday, May 22.
The complex officially opens to the public on May 21 and, although the court will be closed during the mural installation, everyone visiting the park will be able to get up and close to watch the painting project over the next month.
Martel was selected from a pool of applicants by the Spokane Arts team, along with representatives from Spokane Parks, MultiCare Regional Health System and Hooptown USA, who have also helped fund the project.
Martel had two designs that made the top four, but the one picked was also found to be popular among the public.
He said he sees the new complex as a place that “will be the centerpiece for basketball in Spokane, it will be where the community comes together to grow, laugh and have fun.”
