New agreement would allow Cannon shelter tenants to use YMCA showers
SPOKANE, Wash. — The YMCA is working on an agreement with the Cannon Shelter, which would allow homeless tenants to use their shower facilities.
If the agreement is reached, people staying at the Cannon shelter would be able to shower at the Downtown YMCA on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and at the North Side YMCA on Fridays between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
The Cannon shelter has no permanent bathrooms or showers, and the City of Spokane decided to not work on those renovations right after opening, as it would displace people staying in there during the winter.
Pat Estes, Branch Executive of YMCA Inland Northwest, says it is a service the YMCA has been providing for some time, and this new agreement would allow them to serve more people.
Jewels Helping Hands, for their part, will provide a male and female supervisor to ensure safety of YMCA guests and people from the Cannon shelter. They will also be in charge of transportation.
Estes says it is a win-win situation for everyone involved, and that the agreement could be finalized as early as Wednesday.
