Neighbors fearful after early morning rape in Coeur d’Alene
Attack happened early Tuesday morning
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d’Alene Police continue to search for a man who raped a woman at knifepoint early Tuesday morning in front of her home.
The attack took place just north of Sherman Avenue on 18th Street near downtown.
By Wednesday afternoon, many of the people in that neighborhood had no idea that a rape had occurred. Neighbors were shocked when they found out what happened, and were even more concerned that the rapist is still on the loose.
Jon Paul Cardin is one of several neighbors on N. 18th Avenue worried for his family’s safety after learning about the rape. Police say a woman had returned to her home around 2:30 Tuesday morning when she was approached by a man she didn’t know. That man pushed her to the ground and threatened her with a knife before raping her.
[It’s] kind of scary, you know,” said Cardin. “I have six daughters that live around the corner with me and it’s just a scary thought that this guy is still out there.”
One woman – fearing for her own safety – asked kxly4 to not use her name, but says she’s keeping her daughters inside for now and her doors locked.
“Lock them. Double lock them,” she said. “Sleep with my rifle under my pillow – whatever it takes until this guy is caught.”
Coeur d’Alene Police say the man is white, approximately 5-feet-9 inches tall with an average build, has short dark hair, and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.
kxly4 reached out multiple times to the Coeur d’Alene detective on this case for more information, but those calls were not returned.
If you have any information about this assault, contact the Coeur d’Alene Police Department immediately at (509) 769-2320.
