Neighbors concerned over South Hill development plans
SPOKANE, Wash. — After a roaring success in Kendall Yards, Greenstone Homes wants to develop another part of town – Spokane’s South Hill.
The developer is eyeing 25 acres of vacant farmland a few blocks behind 29th Avenue near Southeast Boulevard as the location of an urban neighborhood made up of several businesses and more than 200 single family homes and apartments. Some neighbors say that’s a seed they don’t want planted.
“Houses? Maybe. But the other stuff? No.” said Lindsey Edwards, who moved into a home next to the vacant land with her husband and three kids last May.
“We live across from this untouched area that we can go – it’s like ‘woodsey’ for us. Who wouldn’t want that?”
Edwards and her kids enjoy hiking and exploring the land next door, but she and other neighbors fear the natural playground will soon be gone.
It’s unclear when construction will begin, or how long it would take. Greennstone Homes has named the proposed development “The Garden District” – the development would include extensive trails and open space focused around pedestrians, according to the company’s website.
In an interview with the Spokesman Review, Greenstone said the project will resemble Kendall Yards, but on a much smaller scale.
Kxly reached out to Greenstone Homes on Wednesday but the company did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.
