Neighbors concerned about multiple shootings at same Spokane apartment complex

Some people in an East Central Spokane neighborhood say they are afraid for their safety because of two shootings that took place at the same apartment complex in about three weeks.

Monday morning, police received a call from a man saying he had been shot at the 5th Avenue Court apartments. Inside they found that man who had been shot.

“He appeared to have life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound,” said John O’Brien with the Spokane Police Department.

This comes about three weeks after a man was shot and killed in the same apartment complex.

“At this point, it’s so early in the investigation, we cannot confirm or rule out that the shootings are connected,” O’Brien said.

But these two shootings so close together have neighbors concerned for their safety.

“I have two kids and they can’t walk without being safe. Like, I worry about them being safe by themselves,” said Shilo Rijon.

Rijon has lived in the neighborhood for 19 years. She said in the past few months, crime has appeared to be getting worse in the area.

“We walk together. We don’t singly anymore. And we don’t go out after dark, which doesn’t matter because it’s happning in daylight too now,” Rijon said.

In both cases, police have not made any arrests. They are still trying to piece together evidence from Monday’s shooting.

Police ask that anyone who knows anything about the shooting or who may have been in the area and seen something to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
