NCAA: No. 1 Gonzaga heads off No. 9 Baylor

No. 1 seed Gonzaga beat No. 9 seed Baylor 83-71 Saturday night for a berth in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Brandon Clarke led the Bulldogs with 36 points and Makai Mason led the Bears with 17 points.

Gonzaga (32-3) is playing in its 21st straight NCAA Tournament and with the third No. 1 seed in program history.

The Bulldogs went through West Coast Conference play undefeated, but they were knocked off in the conference tournament title game by Saint Mary’s, snapping their six-year reign as WCC tournament champs.

This is the third time Gonzaga has made the Sweet 16 since 2014. The Bulldogs were in the Elite Eight in 2015 and lost the national championship to North Carolina in 2017.

Baylor, which beat No. 8 Syracuse 78-69 in the first round Thursday, finished fourth in the Big 12 this season before losing to Iowa State in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
