Memorial Day ceremonies, discounts and special events for active military & veterans
SPOKANE, Wash. – — Many people think of Memorial Day as the unofficial start to summer, but the holiday means so much more than that. It’s a day set aside to honor the men and women who have died fighting for our country.
Around Spokane, several cemeteries are holding ceremonies to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Greater Spokane Elks Lodge will run the ceremony at the Spokane-Cheney Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m.
At the State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, the Washington Department of Veteran Affairs will host a ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m. A musical prelude will begin a half hour before at 10:30 a.m.
At 11:00 a.m., both Fairmont Memorial Park and Pines Cemetery will have ceremonies. At Fairmont, the Marine Corps. league will host. At Pines Cemetery, the American Legion Post will take the lead to honor those who have passed. At Pines Cemetery, everyone gets in free to the flag museum.
Riverside Memorial Park has laid out 4,000 flags and has a fleet of military vehicles for visitors to check out.
While the holiday was created to honor those who’ve died, throughout the years, it’s also become a day to show appreciation for our veterans and active military.
Many businesses are offering discounts to mark the holiday.
At Home Depot, veterans get a 10 percent discount for Memorial Day. Active military receive the discount year-round.
Outback Steakhouse is offering 20 percent off the checks of active military, veterans, police officers and firefighters with identification. Year-round there is a 10 percent off “Heroes Discount.”
At Silverwood Theme Park, military personnel, veterans, police officers and firefighters get in free with identification for American Heroes Weekend.
The Civil War Re-Enactment by the Washington Civil War Association in Medical Lake is offering active military and their family free admission to the re-enactment.
As part of the Vernon Baker Memorial Day Free Lunch, active duty military and veterans can get a free lunch at Capone’s Taco Time and Michael D’s Eatery in Coeur d’Alene. No reservation is needed.
At Taco Time, it’s one free item off the menu all day long. Michael D’s Eatery offers free lunch from 8 a.m. to noon. The Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Hayden Capone’s locations free lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
