MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — Deputies arrested a man on Friday for trespassing, only to learn he had been arrested earlier in the week for reportedly attempting to break into multiple cars in Medical Lake.

Joseph B. Thornton, 27, was found asleep with needles in his pocket at the Petro Station on W. Aero Rd on Jan. 17, according to a release by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The responding deputy learned Thornton had an outstanding warrant for second-degree vehicle prowling. He was taken to the Spokane County jail and booked.

Four days earlier, Thornton was stopped by law enforcement for jaywalking on N. Broad St. After issuing Thornton a warning, deputies discovered signs of attempted entry into multiple cars near Thornton’s fresh footprints in the snow.

Deputies spoke with one of the car’s owners, who said she didn’t know Thornton, he had no permission to be on her property, and she wanted to press charges.

Deputies arrested Thornton on trespassing and attempted vehicle prowling charges. During the arrest, Thornton reportedly told deputies it didn’t matter because he would “get out tomorrow because this was Spokane.”

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reminds all residents of Spokane County to remove all valuables from their personal vehicles and to report any signs of suspicious activity.
