Woodward issues curfew for portion of downtown through 5 a.m. Monday, Sheriff requests National Guard assistance

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward has issued a curfew for a portion downtown effective immediately through 5 a.m. Monday.

The area affected is Division to Maple and 5th to Boone.

A release from the city said the George Floyd protest in downtown Sunday was peaceful. They said the situation escalated when a second group became aggressive. Police responded with tear gas and rubbber bullets.

“We are encouraging everyone to immediately leave downtown. Unfortunately, onlookers are gathering with those who are causing problems in our city,” the city said.

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich has also requested assistance from the National Guard.

The mayor and police chief have called a press conference at 9:15 p.m. 4 News Now will carry it live.
