Mariners now the only MLB team to never see a World Series
SEATTLE, Wash — The Seattle Mariners are now the only team to never make the World Series.
The Washington Nationals were the only other team without a World Series appearance until Tuesday night when the Nats completed a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals to move on to the World Series for the first time in the organization’s history.
Now, the Mariners are the only one of 30 Major League Baseball teams to have never made it to the Fall Classic.
They’ve come somewhat close three times — reaching the American League Championship Series in 1995, 2000 and 2001.
But it’s been a disappointing stretch since then. Seattle hasn’t even qualified for the playoffs since 2001, which earns the Mariners another dubious distinction: the longest current playoff drought in all of professional sports.
The Mariners finished the most recent season last in the American League West. Team management continues to say they are building for the future, hoping some of the highly-rated prospects in their minor league system will provide the boost needed to turn the team around.
