Mariners call up O’Brien and Young from Tacoma, place Festa on IL
SEATTLE. — The Seattle Mariners made multiple roster moves Thursday afternoon.
Right-handed pitcher Riley O’Brien and left-handed pitcher Danny Young were promoted from Triple-A Tacoma to the Mariners. RHP Matt Brash was demoted to the Rainiers along with RHP Matt Bush, who cleared waivers and went straight to Tacoma. LHP Nick Margevicius was designated for assignment and RHP Matt Festa was placed on the 15-day injured list (IL) due to tendinitis in his right elbow.
O’Brien was acquired in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds earlier in April. In his five appearances with the Rainiers, the right-hander from Shoreline, Washington didn’t give up any earned runs in almost six innings pitched, tallying seven strikeouts during that time.
Young is getting his first call up to the big leagues after appearing in nine games for Tacoma. Young had one save and gave up seven earned runs in nine innings pitched, tallying 15 strikeouts during that time.
In five starts this year, Brash went 1-3 with a 7.65 ERA. The 23-year-old walked 17 batters, striking out 19 batters in the same stretch. The top-100 prospect (#45 on Baseball America and #98 on MLB Pipeline) made his MLB debut on April 12 against the Chicago White Sox, where he threw 5.1 innings, striking out six batters and giving up only two earned runs on four hits.
Before being placed on the IL, Festa threw in 11 games for the M’s, striking out 20 batters, which is ranked 3rd highest in all the majors. Festa went 0-0 with a 5.25 ERA before being placed on the IL.
Margevicius gave up 17 earned runs in 12 innings pitched for the Rainiers, adding 11 strikeouts before getting DFA’d.
Koch heads back to the Rainiers after being DFA’d himself on April 29, successfully clearing waivers. In four appearances this year, the 31-year-old pitcher posted a 0-0 record with a 8.41 ERA.
The 12-13 Mariners take on the 15-10 Tampa Bay Rays Thursday night at Safeco Park. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m.
