Manhole explodes in downtown Spokane; power restored


SPOKANE, Wash. — A manhole exploded in downtown Spokane early Friday morning.

According to Spokane Fire, they received a call just after 5:30 a.m. Firefighters said the fire sparked underneath the road in an Avista vault.

People reported seeing smoke pluming out of the manhole Friday morning on the 500-block of West Riverside Avenue.

Avista temporarily shut down power in the downtown Spokane core area before making repairs. Power was restored to the area around 11:30 a.m.
