Airway Heights Police Department Sergeant Robert Swan said around 4:30 Friday morning, officers attempted to stop a black Volkswagen Jetta with no plates that had been driving erratically near Highway 2 and Garfield.

Officers were unsuccessful in their attempts to stop the driver so they assembled spikes, which he drove over, causing the two front tires to go flat. It didn’t stop the currently unidentified man, who continued to drive recklessly through Airway Heights and on to I-90, where he lost one of the tires.

He continued to drive on. When he reached the City of Spokane, officers with the Spokane Police Department assisted in the chase but said they had to stop because it was too dangerous.

When the driver of the Volkswagen Jetta reached downtown Spokane, he lost the second front tire. At Division and Olive he stopped and ran from the car, leaving his 9 months pregnant girlfriend in the car. Officers learned she’d been in the car the entire duration of the chase.

He ran for a period of time and then jumped in the Spokane River. He swam across and complained of an injured ankle before officers lost sight of him. K9, a drone and helicopters were used to try and locate him. He was eventually found in some bushes along the river with the assistant of a boat and water rescue team. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Swan said there was a warrant out for the suspect from the Department of Corrections as well as multiple, local jurisdictions.

The suspect’s girlfriend was also transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center, as she’d complained of stomach pains. She does not face any charges.

Additional charges for the suspect are pending.
