Man tries to rob house, assaults family on Christmas Day

On Tuesday around 3:10 p.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of 12th Avenue after receiving a 911 call.

Dispatch had taken the call from a male caller screaming, but no further information was given before the caller disconnected.

Lewiston dispatch called the number back, getting a female on the line this time.

She told dispatchers that an unknown man had broken into their residence and that her husband and son were fighting with him.

The caller also said that her husband and son had sustained head injuries and were bleeding.

Officer T. Woods arrived within two minutes of being dispatched and found the suspect fighting with the two male victims.

The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Robert C. Kay, was swinging a broken wooden lamp at the two victims.

Officer Woods immediately went to Kay and began fighting with him. Woods was able to get control of Kay and place him in handcuffs.

Additional officers arrived and began investigating the incident.

Based on eyewitness statements and evidence, it was found that Kay had forced entry into the home while the victims were not there. The victims arrived later and found Kay inside with two bags in hand while he was stealing property from the home. Kay had additional stolen items in his pockets and his person.

A fight broken out when the two male victims attempted to stop him.

Kay was taken into custody for Burglary, two counts of Aggravated Battery and one count of Malicious Injury to Property. All of these charges are felonies.

The two victims were treated at the scene by Lewiston Medics, but were later transported to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
