Man killed by Spokane Co. Sheriff’s deputy identified
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in Spokane Valley Saturday night.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. Saturday near an apartment complex in the 2800 block of North Cherry, just off of Pines Road.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were responding to a report of a man who appeared to be high on drugs and was running in between children who were playing near the apartment complex.
Two deputies arrived at 5:35 p.m. and tried to talk with the man, now identified as 25-year-old Ethan Austin Murray, but he walked away and ignored them. According to a release, Murray then went through a hole in a fence and began running toward a wooded area.
The Sheriff’s Office said one of the deputies caught up to Murray near a homeless camp. The deputy reported on his radio that Murray was making threats and said something was in his pocket. The deputy then reported shots had been fired and requested medics.
A witness told KXLY4 Murray appeared to reach for something, and the deputy repeatedly said “Put it down,” before shooting.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies began life-saving measures until Spokane Valley Fire personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, Murray was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy who shot Murray has not been identified, but is on administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated.
As of right now, investigators are ruling this incident a homicide.
Investigators would like anyone who witnessed this shooting and has not already been contacted by law enforcement to call Crime Check at 509-456-32233.
