Man arrested in Spirit Lake for second-degree murder, victim identified

SPIRIT LAKE, ID. — A man has been arrested for second-degree murder after shooting his friend in the head.

According to the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect, 64-year-old Michael Schofield, called 911 to report that he shot his friend in the head on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road near Rocky Mountain Ranch Road and Beare Road.


Deputies found the body in the front yard of the home with a gunshot wound to the head. They detained and arrested Schofield, while also recovering a handgun from the scene.

Schofield was booked into the Bonner County Detention Center for second-degree murder.

The victim was later identified as 66-year-old Steven M. Moore from Westminster, Maryland. Next of kin have been notified.

The Bonner County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the 66-year-old’s death.
