A man suspected of shooting an officer in the head in Washington state has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Multiple news outlets reported that 44-year-old Ernesto Rivas was charged Tuesday in the shooting of 61-year-old Mike “Mick” McClaughry.

McClaughry was shot in the head Thursday while canvassing a neighborhood in Mount Vernon, about 60 miles north of Seattle, for witnesses to a report of another shooting.

Rivas is being held on $1 million bail. Rivas was taken into custody following an hours-long standoff, during which authorities say he repeatedly fired at officers.

He is described in court documents as a gang member who did not admit to shooting McClaughry.

Two boys, ages 15 and 16, were with Rivas at the time and face the same charges.

McClaughry remains in critical condition at a Seattle hospital.
