Lucky Friday miners on strike, claiming unfair labor practices
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Miners on strike in North Idaho held a rally Friday at Hecla Mining Company’s headquarters in Coeur d’Alene.
Members of local 5114 Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan are on strike against what they say are unfair labor practices at Hecla Mining Company.
Hundreds of Untied Steelworkers members, retirees, and their families were there Friday to support the 250 miners who have been on strike since last March.
They were working under the terms of an expired agreement for nearly 11 months while negotiations were going on, when the dispute began.
“All we’re asking for is a fair contract,” said Dave Roose, President of the USW Local 5114. “We’re not being greedy, we’re not being unfair.”
Roose says two things Hecla wanted to take away in their new contract, were the ability for miners to bid on certain projects, and the ability for them to constantly know their wages for each job.
