Local YMCA reflects on Paul Allen’s generosity

He was one of the Northwest’s most influential businessmen and philanthropists – best known as the co-founder of Microsoft and the owner of the Seattle Seahawks. Some in Spokane are remembering billionaire Paul Allen for another reason – his generosity.

“He left a lasting legacy here in Spokane and everyday his gift continues to have a positive impact in our community,” said Julie Banks, community development director for YMCA of the Inland Northwest.

Allen’s name is etched on a wall of donors inside the YMCA and YWCA’s central facility in Spokane. In the last two decades, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation donated $250,000 – some of that money helped pay for the central facility used by thousands of people every week.

“With opening this facility we are able to serve one in eight community members,” Banks said.
