Local events to honor slain University of Utah student

As the anniversary of Lauren McCluskey’s death approaches, Pullman community members will run in her honor on Saturday.

McCluskey, a former Pullman High track star, was shot and killed at the University of Utah last October. Investigators identified 37-year-old Melvin Rowland as the suspected shooter. He was not at the scene but was later found dead.

This weekend, runners are invited to participate in the Lauren McCluskey Race for Campus Safety. Funds raised will go to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation, and will include a dedication for Lauren’s Cat Wing at the Whitman County Humane Society.

The 5k race begins at 9 a.m. at Mary’s Park, followed by the Humane Society dedication at 2 p.m. The day will end at 6 p.m. with a ticketed dinner at Banyan’s Event Center.

Also on Saturday, Washington State University will offer a free self defense class in honor of McClusky. The class is scheduled for 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. and is open to all participants 16 and up.
