SPOKANE, Wash — Christmas is a day to spend with loved ones, but at Sally’s House, an emergency foster care receiving facility, the holiday can be difficult.
“The kids come from horrific situations so we want to provide love on Christmas Day, and that comes from pancakes, and presents, and surrounding them with staff that just really love them,” said Major Ken Perine, Corps Officer for Salvation Army Spokane.
For the past six years, Major Ken Perine and his family have brought a Christmas family tradition they’ve done in their home to Sally’s House.
“When we were kids, my dad would wake up, and then he would have this magical pancake feast already prepared,” Bethany Perine said. “He didn’t tell us how he made the double chocolate-chip pancakes until way later in life.”
Every Christmas morning since they’ve been in Spokane, Major Perine and his family wake up to make his double chocolate-chip pancakes, along with an entire breakfast spread.
“What child wouldn’t want to have a pancake infused with chocolate? And then syrup and butter on top of that is just, it’s sugary buttery goodness,” Major Perine said.
It’s become one of his daughter Bethany’s favorite traditions.
“When you’re bringing the magic to people, it makes it a little more special,” she said.
