A sign in Liberty Lake was hacked to display an inappropriate message, officials said.

A digital road sign in Liberty Lake was hacked overnight Thursday to display two messages, one in support and one critical of President Trump, officials told 4 News Now.

The sign was posted along S. Liberty Lake Road and E. Sprague Avenue near the Trailhead Golf Course.

Martha Lou Wheatley-Billerter with Spokane County Public Works, as well as BiJay Adams with the Liberty Lake Sewer & Water District, confirmed the sign belongs to a private contractor assisting the two utility agencies with a project.

The sign, which was posted to display traffic notices regarding the paving project, was hacked to say “Paving today 9/6/19, [expletive] Trump ahead.” Adams said the sign also read “TRUMP 2020” at the time the traffic control company went to fix the sign.

Adams said the issue was taken care of shortly after the district was notified. He said the department and contracting company are still working to determine what exactly happened, but believe the sign was Wi-Fi enabled, making it fairly easy to be hacked.

4 News Now has reached out to the private contracting firm for comment.
