COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The holiday weekend is here and with all the celebrations comes heavy patrols on the road and water.

Law enforcement is already set up in downtown Coeur d’Alene, hoping to encourage people to make smart decisions.

Rayann Higgins got off work early and plans to spend time on the water. Her family is making their best efforts to avoid the biggest crowds.

“We will stay away from the other end of the lake where the fireworks go off because it gets a little crazy down there, so we stick to this end of the lake,” Higgins said.

Kootenai County Sergeant Jeff Howard says people will notice more boats on the water. Not only will the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office be there, but they are getting some extra help from the U.S. Coast Guard.

“What we don’t want is people abusing the celebration of Fourth of July and taking things too far,” Howard said. “We’re trying to set the tone, just let people know we’re out here.”

They want everyone to have fun but do so responsibly. If you are drinking, make sure to have a designated driver.

Remember to also stay hydrated. It will be warm and that will make a difference in how your body tolerates alcohol.
