Karen was born on February 11th,1959 in Pomona CA. She was the oldest child to George and Barbara Smith. The family moved to Newport in 1967 after a vacation to the area. She attended the Newport schools, and graduated in 1977. Places of employment were the Grizzle Drive Inn, Sprouse Ritz, and Ben Franklin. She was the face of Ben Franklin. There she worked in the areas of the office doing payroll, ordering, also doing cashiering, fabrics, crafts, and scrapbooking. She used her talents to inspire, and support others to be creative. Her last job was working at the Visitors Center by the Big Wheel. There she was an advocate for Newport. She loved supporting small business, and events in the area.
She was involved in the Explorer group in High School that her parents were the leaders of. Helping in the craft area at the Cusick Fair was always an event she looked forward too. She enjoyed reading, cross stitching, knitting, sewing, scrapbooking, and several other crafts.
She was active in the Woman’s Bible Study group, and Women’s Auxiliary in Priest River. She helped serve breakfast, took notes for the meetings, helped sell Red Poppies, and several other activities for the organization.
She enjoyed old TV shows and movies, Star Trek, and Mayberry. Karen liked going on road trips, even if just for the day. She created several crossword puzzles for Huckleberry Press.
