Jesuit sexual abuse list released

A list containing the names of Jesuits who have credible allegations of sexual abuse filed against them has been release.

The list was released by the Jesuits West Province which is the division of the worldwide Society of Jesus. The Jesuits West Province territory includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

There are more than 30 Jesuits named who at one time or another were connected to Spokane’s Gonzaga University, Gonzaga Prep, Sacred Heart Medical Center, Sacred Heart Church in Desmet, Idaho, Sacred Heart Church, in Wellpinit, WA and Mount St. Michael’s in Spokane.

Gary Uhlenkott, Thomas Connolly and Francis Burrus are the only living Jesuits named on the list who served at Gonzaga.

Connolly and Uhlenkott are currently residing at a Jesuit Retirement Center in California.

Uhlenkott, pleaded guilty in February 2016 to viewing depictions of minors engaged in sexual explicit conduct in the 2nd degree in April 2013.

He had been a Jesuit priest for 25 years at the time and was a professor of music at Gonzaga.

The Diocese of Spokane released this statement on the abuse:

“Today the Jesuits West Province released a list of credibly accused members of their religious order. The Diocese of Spokane once again expresses sorrow and apologizes to the victims of clergy abuse. The move by the Jesuits to release the names of the credibly accused is in line with the policies and actions of the Diocese of Spokane. For over a decade we have maintained and published a list of credibly accused clergy through print media and on the Diocesan website. As the Church works through the difficult issues of abuse and corruption within her own ranks we thank God for the bravery of the victims, the tireless work of investigators and the faithful service of so many lay men and women.”

Gonzaga University released this statement on the alleged abuse:

“Our country – and our Church – are experiencing a profound reckoning regarding sexual abuse and misconduct. We, as a university community, have been deeply affected by this crisis. We support the decision of the Jesuits West Province to release the names of priests with credible accusations of abuse today, and wish to express our sadness and compassion for all who have been subjected to harm.

There are names of Jesuit priests on the Province’s list who, in the past, worked at Gonzaga or who lived in the Jesuit retirement community and/or the Jesuit infirmary that was located here. We are carefully reviewing the list for any necessary actions.

Gonzaga University is committed to the human dignity of every individual and the safety of our campus community and visitors. We have zero tolerance for any form of sexual misconduct, and we stand in solidarity with victims of abuse and neglect. Members of campus have multiple avenues for reporting any form of abuse, misconduct or bias. Reports are investigated promptly and swift action is taken when necessary. For more information please reference President McCulloh’s letter to the Gonzaga Community on October 9, 2018.”
