Obituary Template 2022 07 20t140139525
Janice Marie “Jan” Richardson passed away peacefully in her home in Spokane Valley July 11th, surrounded by family and friends.

Jan was born in Wallace, Idaho on October 13, 1940 to Wayne and Pearl (MacGuffie) McCoury. Raised by Wayne and her stepmother Elvira, Jan graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1959. Jan had an exceptional career in public service in various administrative roles over four decades. Jan worked in the US Navy underwater training program supporting US Astronauts in the mid 1960’s. She also was the executive secretary for the Spokane Mayor’s office in 1979 and had stints with Pacific Northwest Bell. For 24 years, Jan worked for the Department of Social and Health Services, eventually becoming the Regional Officer Manager for all of Eastern Washington in the DSHS A&AFS agency. Jan earned various service commendations, but her passion was entering a variety of baked goods in the Spokane Fair where she consistently won blue ribbons for butter cookies, banana bread, apple pies, and her highly sought-after special occasion mints.

Jan was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority in the Alpha Chi Master chapter for 61 years. She recently served as her Chapter President and Spokane Council President, and devoted her time and energy to various community service endeavors during her many years of service. She adored her BSP sisters and exemplified this love in many ways.

Jan is survived by her son, Chris and his wife Charity of Puyallup, WA and her brother, David McCoury and his wife Dollie of Spokane along with many cousins and loved ones. Along with her cousins Charlotte and Linda, the three made up “the golden girls trio” and had many special get-togethers. There is no one more conscientious and hardworking, no one more devoted as a mother, and her family will deeply miss her generous heart and warm smile.

Viewing will be Tuesday, July 19th from 10am to 12:30pm, with a Funeral beginning at 1pm, all at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N Government Way, Spokane WA 99224, a concluding graveside will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers can be sent to the Heritage Funeral Home by 10am on July 19th.
