‘It was hard to imagine’: Free self-defense class following Kendall Yards attack

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A free self-defense class is being hosted this Thursday evening.

Hilary Shaffer, a personal trainer hosting the event explains it’s because her friend’s sister was attacked in Kendall Yards.

“We live in a beautiful city and it was just too close to home, it was hard to imagine that someone would’ve been attacked right there,” said Hilary Shaffer, who’s hosting the class. “It was hard to hear that that happened, and who it happened to…somebody I actually knew, not just someone that was in our community.”

The upcoming self-defense class is free for everyone in Spokane Valley and the Inland Northwest.

“It was a horrific, traumatic event that happened, and it shouldn’t have happened. We shouldn’t have to protect ourselves, we shouldn’t have to learn self-defense techniques, but I’m glad we do have somebody there to teach us those moves,” Shaffer said.

Opal Harbert is a martial arts teacher and will be one of the instructors in the class.

“Self defense is really that on the fly, someone bigger than me, someone stronger than me, maybe someone who’s trained before,” said Harbert

Techniques will be taught that Harbert explains people can use in response to an attack.

“I really hope that out of this everyone who participates, leaves feeling empowered and feeling like they are more capable and they’ve really gotten something out of this class,” said Harbert.

It’s being held at at 2818 North Sullivan Road, Suite 100 on Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

“It’s a great way to bring everyone in the community together and offer something to give them a little bit more protection,” Shaeffer said.
