ISP: Off-duty Nez Perce Tribal officer in ‘fair’ condition after shooting at his home

A Nez Perce Tribal police officer is in ‘fair condition’ at a Lewiston hospital after being shot at his home Wednesday, according to the Idaho State Police.

Officer Josh Rigney was off-duty when Daniel Cook Jr. fired into his home, striking him twice.

Lewiston Police officers chased Cook to the Nez Perce County fairgrounds. ISP says Cook was firing at officers from his vehicle. He was shot and killed by LPD officers’ returned fire. Those officers have not been identified.

The Idaho State Police have not released any information pertaining to motive. But, moments before the shooting, a neighbor said she spokane to Cook, who inquired about Rigney’s whereabouts.

Rose Covey lives in a neighboring duplex to Officer Rigney’s home, separated by Peach Tree Lane.

She said shortly before the shooting on Wednesday afternoon she was home with her three young children when she heard a knock on the door. She said the knock sounded aggressive, but she was expecting package deliveries and did not think much of it. When the knock sounded again, Covey said she opted not to answer the door but to speak to the man outside through an upstairs window.

The Idaho State Police have identified that man as Daniel Cook Jr, 36, of Lewiston.

Covey said she asked Cook what he wanted and he told her he was wondering “where the tribal cop lived.” She pointed him in the direction of her neighbor’s home, where, she said, a Nez Perce vehicle sat outside.

Within moments, Covey said she heard voices exchanged, followed by gunshots. She said she saw Cook drive off in a vehicle and then called 911.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact ISP District 2.
