Inaugural Create Spokane event celebrates art through October
SPOKANE, Wash. — It’s a first for Spokane: an entire month dedicated to the arts. Create Spokane is a 31 day celebration of the city’s arts and culture, spanning an array of disciplines.
In recent years, grungy freeway underpasses have been turning into tunnels of urban expression. It’s one of the many ways Spokane Arts is working to beautify Spokane for it’s residents, tourists and those looking to move to the area. Create Spokane hopes to increase the visibility of art through various activities during the month of October. Those activities include gallery openings, presentations at local studios and tours of the city’s murals.
“The arts are sort of the way we come together as a community and it how we express ourselves. It’s how we put a stamp on what makes us unique as a community,” said Spokane Arts Interim Director Luke Baumgarten.
He adds that most of the activities are low-cost or free and art lovers off all ages are welcome.
