Idaho women’s hoops fall at No. 7 Stanford

Freshman Gina Marxen paced all scorers with a 22-point outing as the No. 7 Stanford women’s basketball team defeated Idaho, 115-71, on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion in California.

“They’re ranked seventh in the country for a reason,” said Jon Newlee . “I think they are even better than that when you get a chance to play them. They’re fast, big and long on the inside as well as the perimeter. They’re extremely fast getting up and down the floor, so that was impressive. However, I thought we had some bright spots this afternoon as well.”

It was a good outing for the Idaho (1-1) freshmen as all four found their way in scorebook tallying 46 points combined. Marxen paced the freshmen with a career and game-high of 22-points. Janie King followed with 18 points and added four rebounds on the afternoon. Hailey Christopher added six points and three assists while Chayse Milne got her first three points of her career in a Vandals jersey.

“The way our freshmen played was the biggest bright spot for us,” said head coach Jon Newlee . “I thought all four of the freshmen played with no fear. Having Gina and Janie step up and hit shots early was great. Tara said after the game, their whole plan was to shut down Mikayla and Taylor and make somebody else do something. To see the freshmen step up and play with no fear in a game at Stanford was great us as a team going forward.”

Alanna Smith, All-Pac-12 selection and Wooden Award contender, and Kiana Williams led four other Stanford (2-0) players in double-digit. Stanford won the battle of the boards out-rebounding the Vandals 46-15.

While King paced the Vandals in rebounds, Mikayla Ferenz added four. Ferenz found productivity in her passing as she dished out four assists. Junior Isabelle Hadden came off the bench to give the Vandals a quick spark early in the first quarter tallying eight points. Taylor Pierce struggled from behind the arch, as did Ferenz, but she was able to finish the game with five points.

Idaho will travel to Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday, Nov 17, when it plays Texas Tech. Tip-off on Saturday is set for 1:00 P.M. PT.
