A look at Christmas by the numbers
Americans spend a lot on holidays.
According to the National Retail Federation, the average American will spend about $1,000 on Christmas in 2019. As for what they’re spending that money on, most of it goes toward decorations, candy and gifts.
Barbie and LEGO topped the list for the most popular toys. Gift cards, of course, are crowd-pleasers as well.
If you’re still looking for that special gift and aren’t quite ready to go the gift card route, here are a few suggestions (although you’ll have to brave the crowds at a physical store to get them home in time for Christmas):
Americans also spend a lot of money on getting their homes ready for the holidays. More than $1 billion is spent on Christmas trees each year, which adds up to about 34.5 million real trees in people’s homes.
And then there’s travel. The number of year-end travelers has steadily increased over the past decade. Almost 116 million Americans will be on the move over the holiday season in 2019, and the vast majority will travel by car.
Whether you love it or hate it, snow is a big part of Christmas for many people. Here’s a look at which parts of the country are likely to have a white Christmas, according to data from the NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.
